bankruptcy affiliate program

How do I apply to a US college/university as an international trasferee?
I currently attend an international business school in the Philippines that has affilliates all over the world. The program I am in requires me to take the few classes available in the Philippines and then transfer to an affiliate. However, I am not looking to finish my degree in any of those affiliate schools.
It gets more complicated. I am also an American citizen that graduated high school in the Philippines. I did not take the SATs or any tests similar to it. I want to transfer to a university in southern California but I don’t know what status to apply for. I am not a foreign student, for I was born and raised in California, but I did not graduate or attend a U.S. school since 7th grade. Furthermore, my grades aren’t necessarily great, my dad filed for bankruptcy and moved to the Philippines, and my mom is stuck in the Philippines earning in the low PhP.
What universities around Southern California are recommended for someone in my situation? How do I go about applying?
If you’re attending an appropriately accredited and a respected university, then you should be able to apply to any US university as a transfer student, depending on the number of credits/classes you’ve already completed. You would not be an international student if you are a US citizen, so you’d be able to apply for financial aid, which will help a lot (you use the FAFSA for that.)
Since you’re applying as a transfer student, your high school grades don’t matter, and you probably won’t have to take the SAT (unless the uni requires that of foreign applicants.) You may, however, need to have your foreign university transcripts certified – but you’ll need to discuss that with admissions at the California schools you apply to. They can guide you through that process.
If your university grades aren’t all that great, that is going to be the main issue in terms of where you can apply. Happily, there are colleges and universities out there for students at almost all GPA levels, so you will find something in California that works for you.
I’ll give you a few colleges that might work for you, below. But in all circumstances, contact their admissions departments directly, as soon as you can, do discuss your situation. You’re a bit unique – that can be a good thing, but you will need specific advice from them on a few things.
Colleges I think you could get in to, with grades that aren’t very strong:
- Bethany College
- Dominican College of San Rafael
- Hope International University
- Cal State Bakersfield
- Cal State Fullerton
- Cal State Hayward
- Cal State San Marcos
- U C Riverside, maybe
There are others, but those should get you started.
