Can any one clue me as to where I find out about personal spending allowances in England?

I am a single parent, unable to work at the moment. I am having to resort to bankruptcy, but need to dot Is and cross Ts. The CAB have told me my daughter and myself spend too much money on food. We went downhill from there! I want to do the figures myself, online, and have been told by more than one person the CAB budjet figures are probably out of date and are lower than what is acceptable by the official receiver. Only problem is, I have no idea where to find any guide to realistic figures for personal expenditure. Any clues would be fantastic.
