disfunctional relationships:
Jake: in love with brett, brett loves him. has an injury and can’t have sexual intercourse, brett sleeps with almost every guy as an escape,
cohn: loves brett, is like a stalker and scares her away.
isolation:
Jake: wounded in WWI can’t sleep with anyone.
Cohn: feels like an outsider b/c he is jewish, and the only nonveteran out of everyone on the trip.
aimlessness/disillusionment:
Jake: insecurities about masculinity and injusry and love for brett cause him pain.
Cohn: irrational attachment to brett(terrified of rejection), traditional values/beliefs.(never experienced war first hand), feekings of otherness and inadequacy.
