How can I start a small house-cleaning business after bankruptcy and very little cash? What are the steps?
Starting a house cleaning business is really not that expensive. Mostly you’ll need your main cleaning supplies; mop, bucket, carrying caddy, furniture polish, window cleaner, bathroom cleaners, toilet brush, cleaning rags (cloth diapers work best), a canister vaccum w/attachments http://i.walmart.com/i/p/00/02/31/69/11/0002316911199_150X150.jpg and an commercial grade vacuum http://www.odorstainremover.com/media/ironside.jpg
The industrial strength vacuum may be the most expensive item but it will last a very long time. If you’re short on cash, a less expensive one can last long enough until you get more clients. Canister vacuums are great for stairs and hard floors.
Advertising can be cheap as well; a local newspaper ad or fliers. Once you get your first clients, good work travels fast in their circle. My mother & I never advertised, it was all by word of mouth. It didn’t take long for our schedule to fill up.
You will also need to figure out how far in your cleaning duties you’re willing to go; cleaning only or also doing their laundry (washing &/or ironing), or cleaning the windows.
Offer free estimates. When you have an interested client, go to their home and find out what they actually want done and what days they’re interested in; some clients will want every week or every other week. Get a scheduler and notebook.
Your rates can be figured different ways but try to be competitve to other residential cleaners. You can offer specials on weekend &/or special event cleanings.
Cleaning techniques are also key. Try not to leave smears, make beds ‘hotel style’, pick up and straighten what you can, floors are always last, vacuum carpets in a V-pattern, always start on the upper floors and work your way down and then out the door. Working in pattern leads to less back-tracking, which takes up time or starting in too many rooms at once can leave things uncleaned.
Having at least 2 people, youself and another, will help starting out.
Oh, also use your notebook/scheduler for alarm codes and get a keyring for the house keys.
As far as taxes, you won’t be getting any W-2s. While your clients hired you and determined how and what things get done, that does not automatically make you an employee. There are other factors that determine whether you’re considered an independent contractor or an employee. For this type of work, you’d be an independent contractor/self-employed. P.S.- Cleaning supplies can be purchased at your local $1 stores, Family Dollar or Dollar General; you can always “upgrade” later.
And If you use cloth diapers, when you wash them don’t use fabric softener. Fabric softener will leave streaks.
