I know the laws about filing for bankruptcy vary from state to state but what are the basic rules?
We just want to discharge some of our debt and not all of it, is that possible. We need to be able to keep our car and since we still are paying for it I was wondering if there is a way to keep that out of the filing. I was also wondering how long it would stay on our credit and if we can do it ourselves and not have to hire a lawyer. I know I’ve seen bankruptcy kits before in bookstores here so i’m just wondering if that still has to go through the hands of a lawyer. Thanks
At the behest of the credit card industry the law was changed about seven years ago, in order to make it harder for people to write off credit card debt.
You would be well advised to talk to a lawyer before you do anything. Many will give a free consultation which would allow you to ask many of your questions and get informed advice.
