bankruptcy medical costs

Help with medical bills.?
I am trying to get some help for my fiance, He had to have surgery and accrued over 11,000 in medical bills. Now they have gone to collection because they won’t accept any thing other than a minimum payment of about 400 a month. We can not afford to pay that much. I have tried to reason with the hospital that did it, they say call the collection agency, collection agency says nothing less than 400, so i called a cred counseling agency, they said to seek legal advice and file bankruptcy.
How does bankruptcy work, how much does it cost, we are really lost!!! Please HELP!!!!
I work for a hospital in the business office and once you have gone into collections you must deal with the collection agency. there is a minimum amount due but truth be told as long as you make some kind of payment it may help. Some people have filed for bankruptcy due to medical bills. You will want to contact a lawyer.
