Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom to close its’ doors……..?

Found out today that Kentucky Kingdom is closing. The link to the article is below for anyone that is interested. They “say” it has nothing to do with the bankruptcy proceedings but that it is due to the fact that the State Fair Board would not negotiate for a new lease.

I went to the park once and I am sorry to say that it was not a pleasant experience. I guess I was spoiled by growing up so close to Cedar Point.

Opinions?

I have heard rumors about that particular park closing since the early summer, if you search back far enough in my answers on here, there are definitely a few of them related to that. I am not the least bit surprised. I felt that it was the worst Six Flags park I ever visited, and I have been to quite a few of them. The setup was very awkward with having to cross that bridge over the road to get from one part to the other. Several of the rides were moved there from the Chicago park after major mechanical issues and/or injuries (uh, yeah) – St. Louis ended up with the other Chicago ride rejects (are you surprised?). I feel fortunate that I had a chance to visit before it closed, I do love wooden roller coasters, especially rickety old ones, and Thunder Run was a pretty decent coaster, and I loved Stella and Lola, the Twisted Twins – they were originally named the Twisted Sisters until there was a legal issue with the band Twisted Sister :(

At one time, they also had nitro powered dragsters, it was a pay extra attraction, but those things really rocked – ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…

T2 was a pretty cool coaster too, it was like a Batman but you sit two across instead of four which made the thrill factor higher. Chang kind of stunk, it was a stand up coaster that went upside down and was supposed to be all that, but it was really lame. The little rollercoaster that looked like rollerskates was fun, that was a different little ride. The carousel was awesome! I just remembered about that, they had these things you sat in that spun around on it, a lot more fun than an up and down horsey, altho they did have those on it too :)

Now I am even sadder because I will be thinking about this park closing and trying to remember what else they had at it that I will miss – I hate to see parks close even more than I hate to see rollercoasters torn down. I was kind of hoping that they would be able to negotiate something with the state of Kentucky to buy the park and run it for them under a management agreement. I am pretty sure the state was raking in big bucks during the state fair from the rides there, you could not use your season pass those days and it was a pay per ride deal. I think the economy in that area really has more to do with it than anything else, people there have not been able to afford to go to the park and people like me were buying season passes there on a weekend visit because they were cheaper than one day tickets at my own park. Season pass sales without park attendance really does not help a park, they make their money off the food, drinks, games, souveneirs you buy each time you visit – if your using the pass at a different park, that is the one benefitting.

Oh well. Too bad. Another one bites the dust. Life goes on……….

RIP Kentucky Kingdom, especially Thunder Run and Stella and Lola and the dragsters and the carousel, I will miss you :(

How is the little cow doing?
