Small claims court question?

Last week I accidentally backed my car into both my brother and my mother’s car respectively. And now both are threatening to take me to small claims court to pay their rental car fees. How does that work? It happened in California but I live in Nevada. And my brother says they can garnish my wages, yet I am almost on the verge of a bankruptcy as I pay more in bills a month than I make. How does small claims court work and what if I really cannot afford to pay both back. Will the courts really force me to testify in California when I live in NV? How do I fight them when I cannot afford an attorney? Anything else? Thanks and God bless.

If it happened in California, the court proceedings will be in California. There are no attorneys in small claims, you have to represent yourself. If you are bankrupt, then they can get a judgment against you, but they will have to get in line to collect along with all your other creditors. Since they are your family members, I strongly suggest you try to negotiate a resolution out of court with them, because if you declare bankruptcy, this case is just going to complicate matters.
