Please help! My uncle is crazy. State of CA only.?

My mother-in-law has power of attorney for medical and financial purposes for my uncle. Last summer my uncle acted bizarrely and was doing insane things. Long story short, he got drunk and was injured by the police, got a raging infection from the tazer and fought us to be admitted to a hospital. FINALLY he agreed. He has made a shambles of his finances, lost his job, refuses to go to the doctor and refuses to file bankruptcy. The state won’t allow my mother-in-law to file FOR him with the power of attorney. Clearly he is mentally ill or has dementia. He had purchased 3 very expensive cars within 2 weeks and have all been repossessed, and is about to lose his home. Is there any other legal route we can take to file bankruptcy and put him in a nursing home. He is paranoid and has strange thoughts. Please help.

Here is the web site maintained by the California Judicial Council involving conservatorships. It is in the “seniors” section, but the same rules are applicable for everybody who may be subject to a conservatorship. It appears that this may be what is necessary in your uncle’s case.

In a more charitable light, however, there’s great pleasure to be found in Coppola’s intelligent, no-nonsense handling …
