Did Obama even attempt to keep his “no lobbyist” campaign promise?

In a detailed list of campaign promises, Mr. Obama pledged that “no political appointees in an Obama administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years.”

And yet Craig Becker, one of the current nominees for appointment to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is general counsel to SEIU, and was instrumental in drafting several pro-labor executive orders for the White House, while he was employed by SEIU and the AFL-CIO. These executive orders were signed shortly after the inauguration, and Becker worked on them as part of the transition team, during “vacation time” from his ongoing employment with SEIU and the AFL-CIO. Which means that Obama had trashed his “no lobbyist” promise even before he took office. Your thoughts?

I think that that is one of those promises that could be lived up to only in an ideal world. Our federal government has grown into a very complex being. There are many conflicting interests, many groups and individuals that have power and influence. I don’t think there are things Obama can do, no matter how much he wants to. Unfortunately this is one of them. If you want lobbyists out of the government, you need to change the whole system not just the president.
