Parents Filed for Bankruptcy and wanting to know if a bill I have can be transferred to them?
My parents recently filed for bankruptcy. I have an outstanding medical bill that I got when I was 20 and I am 21 now. I have not paid on it and it got sent to collections despite me trying to get assistance. When I asked why I was denied assistance they said it was because I was tax dependent on my parents. In other words they filed me under their taxes. Since I also live at their house, can they put this bill on their bankruptcy? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Will it affect my credit if they suceed in doing so? Also if I make a payment will that null any chances of it transferring?
Unless your parents had agreed to accept sole responsibility for the bill and the medical office agreed at the time you were treated, that debt cannot be transferred to your parents. It is not your decision but the creditors records that indicates who owes the money for the medical bill.
